Recent open space acquisition preserves views, habitat and agricultural heritage in Lower Blue River Basin

Katherine King, Summit County Open Space & Trails 970-668-4061,

WHAT: The Summit County Open Space & Trails Department will provide a public tour of the historic Doig Homestead property, 273 acres of land at the northern end of Summit County. The property is the largest open space acquisition the County has made in the Lower Blue Basin since 2008, and its purchase preserves significant agricultural history, wildlife habitat and scenic view corridors.

The Doig Homestead property includes irrigated hay meadows, sagebrush, aspen stands and pine groves. In the immediate future, the land will continue to be actively used for agricultural purposes, including grazing and hay production, so it is not open to recreation by the general public. The Oct. 19 tour will serve as a unique opportunity for members of the public to enter the property and view its many historical, ecological and scenic features.

WHEN & WHERE: Those interested in participating in the tour are invited to meet at the Dillon Ranger District office, 680 Blue River Pkwy., Silverthorne, at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 19. The group will then carpool north to the Doig property. The tour will conclude back at the Forest Service office at approximately 12 noon.

RSVP: All interested participants must RSVP to Summit County Open Space & Trails Resource Specialist Katherine King at or 970-668-4061.
